Travel and Toursim

Our Travel and Tourism curriculum provides pupils with an engaging introduction to one of the world’s largest industries. It develops students’ understanding introducing them to the key concepts, destinations and organisations that shape the sector. Through practical and vocational learning, pupils gain the knowledge and skills needed to progress to further education while inspiring them to pursue a wide range of careers within the travel and tourism industry.

Aims 

Opening Hearts through inspiration 

• We aim to inspire a passion for travel, culture and global experiences, helping pupils develop curiosity, empathy and appreciation for the diverse people, places and traditions that shape the tourism industry. 

Opening Minds to new knowledge 

• We equip pupils with strong knowledge of destinations, customer needs, tourism organisations, global travel patterns and the economic importance of tourism, enabling them to understand how the industry operates locally, nationally and internationally. 

Opening Minds to deeper understanding 

• We deepen pupils’ understanding of how tourism interacts with environments, communities and economies, exploring both the positive and negative impacts of tourism and encouraging responsible, sustainable decision-making. 

Opening Doors through developing professional skills 

• We further develop key professional skills such as customer service, communication, problem-solving, research and industry standard vocational practices, preparing pupils for future study and opening doors to careers across the travel, tourism and hospitality sectors. 

Course breakdown 

BTEC Tech Award in Travel & Tourism Level 1/2 

Component 1: Travel & Tourism Organisations and Destinations (30%) 

• Internal assessment (coursework). 

• Students learn about different organisations (airlines, tour operators, visitor attractions) and why destinations appeal to tourists. 

Component 2: Customer Needs in Travel & Tourism (30%) 

• Internal assessment (coursework). 

• Focus on customer service, types of customers, and how the industry meets their needs. 

Component 3: Influences on Global Travel & Tourism (40%)   

• External exam. 

• Covers factors that affect tourism (weather, economy, safety, trends) and how tourism changes over time.
